# Charters

Charters are time-limited missions created from shared Virtual Airlines demand. A charter can give you a route, time window, and operating goal that you book with an eligible airline aircraft.

## Read the charter board

The board can show total demand and the amount held, consumed, or still available. Mission cards can be:

* **Available**: ready to reserve.
* **Upcoming**: not open yet.
* **Expiring**: close to the end of its window.
* **Reserved**: held for a pilot.
* **Active**: currently being flown.
* **Depleted**: no remaining demand.
* **Expired**: no longer bookable.

Use the operation and availability filters to narrow the board. The board can display up to 50 missions and refreshes automatically about every 20 seconds.

## Book a charter

1. Choose an available charter.
2. Select the airline and confirm your pilot identity.
3. Choose an eligible aircraft.
4. Set the payload within the charter's capacity and performance rules.
5. Choose a one-to-four-character alphanumeric flight suffix when prompted.
6. Review the mission and select **Book**.
7. Continue the operation from My Flights.

An unstarted reservation is held for two hours. Releasing it before the flight starts returns the demand to the board. The standard charter multiplier is 1.5. VIP charter demand is separate from VIP Operations.

## Eligibility and limits

You need an active airline membership and permission to fly the operation. The aircraft must belong to the selected airline, be available and serviceable, be at a suitable location, and meet the charter's range and performance requirements. Owners, managers, and pilots may fly when their effective permissions allow it; a specialist management role does not automatically grant flight permission.

A charter cannot be booked with zero payload. Demand may carry over between board refreshes, so an item that was available can become held or depleted before you submit the booking.

## When a charter is unavailable

The mission may be upcoming, depleted, expired, held by another pilot, or incompatible with your membership, aircraft, location, or payload. If your membership list appears empty, reload it before assuming you have lost access. A failed booking should release its hold according to the current mission state; reload the board before trying again.

## Charters are not ordinary scheduled routes

A charter is a special mission with its own demand, availability, and booking rules. Do not assume that a charter's payload or position behavior matches a scheduled operation. Read the final booking summary and [From Dispatch to Settlement](./flight-lifecycle) after completion; recognized payload, validation, and settlement still determine the final result.
